Understand local device control

Map the control path

Local control means the computer communicates with a supported device over the household network. It does not make every Wi-Fi device compatible. Record the device model and protocol and check its supported path before changing your household setup.

Check the network

Guest Wi-Fi, device isolation and separate subnets can prevent discovery even when both devices have internet access. Start on the intended local network and compare what Vigil discovers with the devices you actually own. Keep network changes documented so they can be reversed.

Test the fallback

Use the physical control or original device app, then return to Vigil and check the displayed state. A useful setup preserves a practical way to operate essential devices if the computer is off.

1. Test a direct control.
2. Test a state change outside Vigil.
3. Restart the app and inspect the state again.
