Understand sensing

Map the data in your smart home

Identify what stays local, what is stored and what leaves through optional services.

Privacy depends on the complete workflow, including the devices and alert services you connect. Draw a simple map of each source, processor, storage location and destination. Treat optional remote notifications separately from local control.

Work through it

  1. List device observations and the computer that processes them. Identify which activity records are saved and who can access that computer.
  2. Review optional integrations and notification destinations. Record the information sent, the account used and whether the service keeps a copy.
  3. Check the current privacy documentation and practice removing an integration you no longer need. Review access when household members or devices change.

Check your result

  • Each destination has a purpose.
  • Access matches household responsibilities.
  • Retention and removal steps are understood.
