Make self-monitored alerts useful

Define the event, recipient and response before enabling notifications.

2 minute read · Updated September 17, 2026

An alert helps only when someone understands what it means and what to do next. A self-monitored setup depends on the destination you configure and the people available to respond. A sensor event should be described as an observation rather than a guaranteed explanation.

Work through it

  1. Choose a specific event and the hours when it matters. Identify the intended recipient and confirm the notification destination works.
  2. Test with a known event and record the delay. Include enough context to identify the room and time without unnecessary household details.
  3. Review repeated alerts and missed notifications. Adjust the setup based on observed behavior, and test again after network or device changes.

Check your result

  • A test notification reaches the intended person.
  • The event wording matches the sensor evidence.
  • The household knows who responds.
